Earth, in common use for architectural construction for thousands of years, has in the past thirty years attracted renewed attention as a healthy, environment-friendly and economical building material. What needs to be considered in this context? The manual Building with Earth, which has been translated into many languages, describes the building technology of this material. The physical properties and characteristic values are explained in a hands-on manner: With proper moisture protection, earth buildings are very durable, and in particular the combination with wood or straw allows a wide spectrum of design options. Numerous built examples demonstrate the range of applications for this fully recyclable material. Fourth and revised edition of the standard work of reference on rammed earth construction. With ten new attractive international case studiesMany drawings illustrate various construction methods

Chapters cover the history of the material, the properties of plain, reinforced and prestressed concrete, surface finishes, the basic engineering principles of large and small structures and the building requirements with respect to thermal and sound insulation, fire protection and moisture control, reflecting the most recent standards and statutory instruments. Finally, a large number of built examples are presented - from photographs of the completed structures down to detailed plans - to illustrate the broad spectrum of applications for concrete in contemporary building. This volume demonstrates the potential of concrete and documents comprehensively the engineering principles of using concrete in construction.

In modern masonry work it is customary to use large size blocks in building. They fulfil all the construction requirements even in singlelayer outside walls. Using two houses as examples all details are presented clearly and comprehensively in a scale of 1:10. In modern masonry work it is customary to use large size blocks in building. They fulfil all the construction requirements even in singlelayer outside walls. Using two houses as examples all details are presented clearly and comprehensively in a scale of 1:10. The authors elucidate on critical points, showing where care should be given to achieve convincing sustainable results.

Wood is usually perceived as a "traditional" material. However, the properties of this material have now for some time made it possible to design free shapes and highly complex structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded by Julius Natterer, is testing the production of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric structures and curved panels under the guidance of Professor Weinand using digital calculation and computer-aided processing methods. The research results are tested in prototypes, which demonstrate the potential applications in large-scale timber buildings. By exploring the hitherto unused potential of wood as a construction material, this book provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on a new generation of timber buildings.
